Clarence Railway Dams of 1/7/07
Trip report for our trip Sunday 01 July to the Railway dams at Clarence and to the Lost City (and some photo’s)
The trip started at The RAAF base where the five vehicles met. We headed off at about 9.40.
The travel up to the first spot was up the Bells Line of Road taking it nice and easy with the traffic. Our first stop was the turn off to the Dams which is just prior to the Zig Zag Railway. Here we stopped and had a bit of a look at the first tracks down in to the Dam area. One track was a definite No – good winching practice spot though. The second track was given a bit of a trial with Roger (Prado) descending and then coming back up. While he made it ok it was decided that 5 vehicles going down and then back up would have churned the track up too much and would have presented us with problems in particular with getting the last of the vehicles back up. We decided to move on and then came across a third track which was (as the story goes) “just right”. This took us down a level, we then went on to the track to one of the dams, there at least two dams in this area, it was a big rocky a bit bumpy and required a bit of tyre positioning to get it right oh and some moving of rocks. The Dams are a remanent of the Steam Train Days where a lot of water was needed for the trains.
After the Dam we went on to the Zig Zag for morning tea – though we were not staying out in the weather to much, not at 5 degrees. From the Zig Zag we went off to have a look at a little track; bit of an explore. This track proved to be a bit too much (even the motor bikes had troubles) so we then headed off to the Lost City, taking the scenic route as our leader (me) took a wrong turn. IT was OK though – as it gave us some more fun going up and down to get back to the ridge line that runs out to the Lost City. Again we did not stay long of venture far from the warm cars. 5 degrees and a far wind made us very unadventurous!!!!!
Back to Bungelboori Camp ground for a late lunch (2pm) and from there back home. It was a good trip that had some interesting bits a pieces in it and gave one new person (allan) a bit of a look at how we do things.
Cheers Steve
